There are a couple of problems with debt counseling in general.
One is the fact that it is now required to go through debt
counseling as part of the bankruptcy process. This has made
it more difficult to find reliable debt counseling services.
The other problem is that there are so many companies that
advertise themselves as 'debt counseling services' when they
actually are not. They are simply trying to make some money
through the misfortunes of others.

Quality Debt Counseling

What types of debt counseling services should you avoid?
Any company that contacts you, should probably be avoided.
You've seen these people before. They send you emails, smather
their advertisements all over TV and radio or persistently
call you from the screen of an anonymous toll free phone number.
The general idea here is to actively seek debt counseling
rather than letting them come to you. Do your research. Use
the internet. Ask friends and families for recommendations,
etc.
Do
it Yourself Debt Settlement
One of the better places to start is the NFCC (National Foundation
for Credit Counseling). They have non-profit branches all
over the Country and can direct you to a trusted source for
debt counseling and other related services.
Even a financial advisor can usually give you some good advice
when it comes to your finances. You might want to use a combination
of debt counseling sources so that you can whey one against
the other while you formulate your own opinion. There is no
one simple answer. Different people have different financial
circumstances and require different actions.

Nonprofit Agencies
|
|
When debt counseling or debt settlement companies claim that
they are nonprofit, the best thing to do is to simply ignore
this claim.
When the business of debt counseling and debt management
services first started, people were often advised to only
use debt counseling or consolidation services that were nonprofit
The idea was that you could get a better deal from a company
that was not out to make tons of money from people who were
down on their luck. However, there is a very big difference
between being a "nonprofit" organization and being a "charitable
organization".
So, many debt consolidation or debt negotiation services
simply started advertising themselves as a nonprofit organization.
It is simply a marketing trick and the best way to deal with
this is to simply ignore these types of claims. There are
good companies who use this trick as well as debt counseling
services who use this trick and should be avoided. Simply
ignore it.

Making a Choice
|
|
Choosing a debt counseling or debt consolidation service
can seem like a fairly daunting task at first. This is simply
because there are so many services for you to choose from.
True debt counseling does not revolve around a single type
of service. For instance, if a debt counseling agency insists
that the only thing for you to do is get a debt consolidation
loan then they are not really counseling you. The same goes
for a company that insists that you have have them negotiate
your debts in order to reduce your monthly payments.
A good debt counseling service will give you a number of
different options that you can choose from and will help you
investigate in order to determine which option would be best
for your own particular financial needs.
